The Roger's Fire
July 19th, 1936

Fifteen firemen were burned, four seriously, when a propane gas fire destroyed the home of Mrs. Rogers on Lakeside Drive. Five of the burned were treated at the office of Dr. Luke Boyd here in the village. The firemen were Lawerance Skillman, Leon Traynor, Myron Seymour, Leslie Shepardson, and Marvin Lamphere all suffered minor burns. Three were treated and released from Jamestown General Hospital-Paul Guignen, Hugh Barrett, and Frank Lamphear. The remaining seven were admitted to Jamestown General Hospital with first and second degree burns about the face, arms, and back. These were Richard Ward, Axel Lefgren, Clark Lord; the most seriously injured were Sherman Skillman, Maxwell Ward, George Crandall, and Victor Norton. All of the injured firemen fully recovered with the most seriously injured coming home after three weeks.

The fire started in the kitchen due to a leaking propane tank which had just been installed by Reverend Fuller whom sold the fuel. Upon the arrival of the Fire Department Fuller had left the scene and Mrs. Rogers was nowhere to be found. The fire was discovered by the Fire Department in the kitchen where rugs had been thrown over the propane tanks in an effort to smother the fire. A fire extinguisher was used but that only managed to drive the 20 or so firemen out of the house. Shortly after the firemen left the house the house exploded throwing fire and debris. This is when the firemen were injured.

Assistance was received from Maple Springs and Fluvanna Fire Companies.

Hotel Browning Fire
June 20th, 1941

Hotel Browning located on Lakeside Dr. was vacant at the time of the fire.  Assistance was required from Maple Springs, Fluvanna, Mayville, and Jamestown. The fire was extinguished at 3 am. The hotel, built in 1893, was ruled a total loss. An investigation by law enforcement led to the arrest and conviction of Elmer Marsh, age 42 years, of Cassadaga. Marsh was convicted of third degree arson. Marsh was sentenced to two to four years in Attica State Prison.

On October 8th, 1954 construction was started for the new fire hall. The new structure will house the Department's two fire trucks, other fire equipment, and the Department's recently purchased Emergency Rig.

On March 3rd, 1959 a new pumper was purchased from Ward La France Truck Co. in Elmira for $17,318.56. The truck was capable of pumping 500 gallons per minute and had an 800 gallon water tank.  This truck was to replace the 1940 Booster Pump Apparatus.
