History
of the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department
|
||
| The Bemus Point
Volunteer Fire Department was formed on February 27th, 1920 with twenty-four
original members. The first piece of fire equipment was purchased on January
7th, 1920. (That's not a mistake.) A combination Pumper and Booster Truck
was purchased from Waterous Fire Engine Co. for $4,000.
On July 10th, 1920 the Village Board decided to have a dry hydrant installed at the end of Liberty St.. Due to the 20' lift from the lake to the State Rd. it never worked. On July 17th, 1920 the Village Board leased a portion of the Fowler block (building now occupied by Lakeside Market?) for a fire station on Main St.. This building was in use until 1922 when the present day Village Hall was constructed. Bemus Point's first call came on August 24th, 1920 when Fred E. Palmer's motorboat caught fire in the bay. The boat was a total loss, even with the quick response of the fire department. Just under six months later, on February 17th, 1921, the Village Board passed a vote to purchase the department's first siren. The siren purchased was a Double Head 3 Horse Power Single Phase 25 Cycle 220 Volt Sterling Fire Siren for $565. The siren was purchased to replace the previous alarm system which was the Methodist Church Bell. On March 11th, 1921 a small Ford truck was purchased from Skillman's Grocery as an auxillary truck for carrying an extra 500' of hose and firemen. A third truck was purchased on December 23rd, 1922 from Strand Motor Car Co. of Jamestown. The truck was a Larrabee 1 1/4 ton chassis with a 6 cylinder engine which cost $1785. |
